Torino [ENA] In Italy the lockdown situation to avoid the spread of Coronavirus is becoming particularly difficult. After 10 days from the entry into force of the rules restricting personal freedoms, it seems that the results have not yet arrived or that, at least, they are not so perceptible by the population.

Today, March 20th, the Civil Protection war bulletin informs us that in our peninsula the infections have reached 38 thousand cases, that the deaths directly or indirectly linked to the virus are now 4032 and that the people recovered from the epidemic are 5129 . The situation, especially for some Italian regions, primarily Lombardy but also Veneto, Emilia, Piedmont and Marche, is really difficult. The pandemic is severely testing the tightness of the health system, even in those regions where this has always proven to be at the forefront.

The biggest problem is related to the Intensive Care units whose places are starting to run low, causing some hospitals to request the transfer of some patients through the "CROSS", the Remote Emergency Medical Operations Center, in neighboring regions where the situation is less dramatic. In the Bergamasco the most painful news, accompanied by images that have gone around the world: military trucks forced to load coffins of deceased people to transfer them to other places, having exhausted, the Bergamo cemetery, the available places. But ... how do people perceive this news and above all, what is the reaction to the lockdown rules imposed by the government?

Undoubtedly most of the country follows the restrictions diligently and the deserted cities are tangible evidence of this but unfortunately the peculiar characteristics of the virus are such as to allow it to infect people with ease. A few "unconscious" people are therefore enough to create a situation of extreme danger for all. As we have already understood, Coronavirus affects any age group but proves particularly aggressive and often lethal when the infected person is over 70 years old.

This particular characteristic of Covid-19 has led many people, especially young people, to consider themselves immune and therefore to continue to lead a "normal" life despite the rules dictated by the government, civil protection and the higher health institution. By doing this they do not realize that they can become carriers of contagion for their loved ones at home and especially for elderly people living together. It must be said that compliance with the rules is certainly not helped by what everyone defines as the security of impunity which unfortunately is particularly widespread in citizens.

The restrictive laws are there but, as always, we search for a way to get around them and when you can't ... the dominant thought is always the usual: "what risk? The thugs who kill do not go to jail, think if they send me to jail who went for a walk despite the prohibitions! " The presence of the army is invoked from many sides to assist law enforcement in the difficult task of supervising the observance of lockdowns; it could certainly be an excellent help but it would be sufficient to make the penalties heavy, effective and certain for those who do not respect the rules. A complaint (in the last few days 58,000 have been reported in Italy) no longer frightens anyone. Even less the 206 euros to pay!

If, however, the arrest in the act and fines of thousands of euros to be paid immediately (for those who do not have or do not want to pay them, immediate imprisonment) were foreseen, perhaps some greater result could be obtained. To this, of course, we must add the situation of the thousands of illegal non-EU citizens of which our cities are teeming: yesterday around Milan, Rome, Turin it was not difficult to observe small groups of these which, in defiance of any behavioral rule, do not they respected some of the prohibitions imposed.

The fact is that, surely, the virus and the epidemic will sooner or later be defeated; but at what price? You could win in a few weeks, with the active help of the whole population or in months and months, forcing all of us, even the most loyal, to face very long periods of deprivation of our individual freedoms, with consequent psychological and naturally economic damage that it will take years to overcome. We stay at home!
